Question Answer
Polar Molecules molecules that have an unequal distribution of charges
Polarity the property of having 2 opposite poles
Hydrogen Bond a weak interaction involving a hydrogen atom and fluorine, oxygen, or nitrogen atom
Cohesion an attraction between water molecules because of hydrogen bonding; creates SURFACE TENSION
Adhesion an attraction between molecules of different substances Water+ environment= adhesion
What is the difference between a homogenous and heterogenous ? the degree at which the materials are mixed together and the uniformity of their composition
What is a homogenous mixture? A homogeneous mixture is a solid, liquid or gaseous mixture that has the same proportions of its components throughout a given sample
What is a heterogeneous? A heterogeneous mixture is simply any mixture that is not uniform in composition – it's a non-uniform mixture of smaller constituent parts. Using various means, the parts in the mixture can be separated from one another.
What is a suspension heterogenous mixture? can see or tell the difference substances in the mixture
What is a colloid heterogenous mixture? cannot see the individual substances in the mixture but their still not together with the solution
Solvent a substance in which another substances is dissolved
Solute the substance that is dissolved in the solvent
Solution a liquid mixture in which the minor component (the solute) is uniformly distributed within the major component (the solvent).
Acid substances that release hydrogen ions when they are dissolved in water
Base substances that release hydroxide ions when they are dissolved in water
pH the measure of concentration of H+ in a solution
Acidic solutions have pH values ______ than 7 less
Basic solution have pH values _______ than 7 higher
Buffers mixtures that can react with acids or bases to keep the pH in a particular range
